Kathmandu, May 8th 2017 : Nepal Aushadhi Limited (NAL), the government-owned pharmaceutical industry, has resumed the medicine production after eight years.
The government enterprise restarted the production of Jeevan Jal (medicine to against diarrhea) from Sunday. It is noted that a meeting of the Council of Ministers held on September 18 last year had decided to revive the industry.
Minister for Industry Nabindra Raj Joshi inaugurated the restart of the company business amidst a programme. The industry established under the Company Act 2021 BS was closed with the decision of the World Health Organisation to make the Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) standard mandatory.
The government had decided to provide Rs 1.46 million of loan to the industry to restart the production in line with the GMP standard and under the first phase, the government has allocated Rs 0.64 million to the industry.
On the occasion, the Industry Minister said, “Many Nepali people are still deprived of basic medicines like Jeevan Jal and paracetamol and the industry will soon restart the production of 70 types of medicines that the government provides the people free of cost and others as well.”
The industry is learnt to have planned to resume the production of over 15 sorts of medicines (most essential and highly demanded in the market) in the second phase while capsule, medicines under the penicillin group, suspension, ointment and anti-venom are in the list of third-round production.
Also speaking on the occasion, Minister of State for Industry Kanchan Chandra Bade said the government decided to restart the production as it believed that consumers should get quality medicines at an affordable and reasonable price.
Secretary at the Industry Ministry Shankar Prasad Koirala said the government was working on a plan of reinstating all sick industries established from the government and private sectors with an objective of supporting the efforts at attaining economic development and ending the situation for youths to go abroad in search for employment opportunities within the next 10 years.
Industry General Manager Dr Robhas Kusum Subedi shared the information that installations of over 27 sorts of highly advanced equipments to check the standard of manufactured medicines had been carried out in the industry.
Prior to going to the closure, 120 types of medicines were being manufactured by the industry that was established in 2029 BS.
